The goal of Aylesbury's developers is to create a community that has the look and feel of the country--a community that is both aesthetically and socially harmonious. The southern architecture of 75 to 165 years ago contributed to such a feeling. In most cases, its form was simple but tasteful. Its generous use of porches not only invited social interaction between neighbors but also provided space that connected the home's interior to the outdoors.
The architecture of this period (1840 to 1930) took many forms, from the simple “cracker” cabin to large ornate Victorian homes. Countless southern towns demonstrate that a variety of architectural styles, especially vernacular blends of styles, easily co-exist in harmony. It will be the responsibility of Aylesbury’s Architectural Control Committee to insure that the homes built in Aylesbury are architecturally harmonious while allowing owners the flexibility to choose an architectural style that fits their tastes and needs.
To give prospective owners a sample of the architectural styles and features that are suitable for Aylesbury Plantation, we have provided a short tour of homes built in southern communities 75 to 165 years ago. Note the common use of porches, gabled end roofs, and dormers. Many of these homes blend the features of several architectural styles--like the symmetry of Georgian architecture, porches and columns with a Greek Revival influence, and ornate Victorian trim.
Absent in these classical homes are the excessive multiple roof lines and non-functional gable ends, the large steeply pitched hip roofs that do not match the scale of the house, and the asymmetry that is common in many contemporary homes.

We have also included examples of a few recently built homes that reflect the architecture of residences built in the south more than 75 years ago and that would fit the architectural standards for new Aylesbury Plantation homes.
