QUITMAN

Quitman is a picturesque farming town 13 miles north of Ashville on US 221.  There is a small hospital, basic shopping and services and many beautiful old homes and buildings. Quitman is known as the Camellia City.  Its numerous parks and gardens are filled with these elegant winter blooming plants.

The Brooks County courthouse was originally built in 1859, the same year Quitman was chartered.  The Renaissance Revival structure was extensively remodeled in 1892 and recently received a facelift.  Note the stately Presbyterian Church in the background of the above photo.

Quitman’s main street is filled with quaint stores and shops.  For example, stop in Danny’s Barber Shop for the latest community news—since the local paper is published only once per week.  Then, stroll down the block for lunch at the Royal Café.  The food must be good since the local crowds are large, and the restaurant has operated there since the early 1900s.  The back streets are also appealing—like the street where Barr’s Fish Market is located.
